Minneapolis, MN – February 13th, 2008 - MEDNET, an innovative provider of e-health connectivity, GRID and identity management solutions, and CHIC, the Community Health Information Collaborative of Duluth, announced they completed an agreement to expand an Internet system that will enable hospitals and clinics across the huge northeastern area of Minnesota to instantly find and access critical health information on patients while guaranteeing security of that information.
When fully operational a sick child living near the Canadian border may be treated at a nearby clinic and transferred to a hospital in Duluth —a hundred or more miles away. Under this new system her distraught parents won’t have to worry about getting or carrying her medical records from one place to another. Doctors and other medical personnel will not have to worry whether they have all the information they need when they need it.
A driver injured in a collision with a deer in rural Isanti County, taken by an air ambulance to a hospital in Duluth, could be treated quickly and accurately by emergency room personnel. With timely information hospital personnel will be alerted to a latex allergy or the patient is a diabetic and be able to treat him safely and effectively even if he’s unconscious.
Cheryl Stephens, Executive Director of CHIC, in announcing the collaboration with MEDNET, said “The MEDNET system will allow us to provide a Record Locator Service (RLS) system across our community, guaranteeing patient privacy, and providing much better information to providers. This will help our providers increase the speed and safety of health care delivery. Having prototyped this system with MEDNET last year, we are thankful that we can now begin rollout of this system to our community" “We especially like the strong security model which is based on federal standards, and MEDNET’s adherence to IHE and similar national standards.”
John Fraser, MEDNET’s founder and CEO, said the company was "pleased to be selected to provide our open-systems solution to CHIC. This is a pioneering project, and security is critical", Mr. Fraser said, "so our first and foremost goal will be to ensure the security and privacy of patient information by allowing only authorized users access to patient information. We believe that scalable, national systems must be built using national and international standards using the latest open-source solutions to lower costs. We look forward to working with CHIC and their members in northeastern Minnesota to develop these and additional systems for the transfer of medical records simply and securely.”
MEDNET is a Minneapolis-based firm that has created a system that allows providers, payers, emergency rooms, public health, and other health care participants, access to the important health care and insurance information at any time and anywhere while fully protecting patient privacy.
